How to install iTunes with a 1000 song limit

I bought my L7 online and it is a European model so it didn't come with iTunes installed. Keep in mind my phone is from software family "R4513". These instructions may not work on the "R4517" phone. If you have "25R" firmware on your "R4517" L7, then you can not have iTunes with 1000 songs. It will NOT work on this phone. If you have "1ER" firmware then apparently you can have iTunes with 1000 songs on your phone. I don't have this version so I won't be writing instructions on how to do it for that version of the L7.

There are several things you need to get this program running on the L7: first you need the hacked version of iTunes with the 1000 song limit, then you need a program called MotoMidMan to install the Java based iTunes program, then you need a modified Seem "0002_0005" to enable linkage via shortcut to the program, you'll use P2K Tools to upload the seem and finally you'll need MotoTunes which will allow you to transfer songs to the phone because the iTunes desktop program will not recognize the hacked iTunes program on your phone when you install it. I put everything you need (except P2K Tools) in one file here.

There is one very important thing to keep in mind. This hacked version of iTunes will not allow you to sync your phone with your desktop iTunes program. Windows users you will need to use a program like MotoTunes to put the songs onto the phone. Macintosh users you will want to download an alternate version of the iTunes program that I have right here. This version has a rebuildable database feature, which means you can BlueTooth the songs to your phone (or use the USB cable to transfer them to the storage card) and iTunes will recognize that the songs have been added after you rebuild the database. I will show screen shots of this later. Windows users, you could also use this version if you'd rather not use MotoTunes.

Once you have downloaded my file, unpack everything. Now make sure your phone is set to "Data/Fax Connection" mode. To check this setting press the

key then go to "Settings", press "Select", go to "Connection", press "Select", go to "USB Settings", press "Select" then look at "Default Connection:". If it says "Memory Card" then press "Change", scroll to "Data/Fax Connection" and press "Select".

Start MotoMidMan. Give it a minute to scan your phone. It will then display all the Java based programs installed on your phone. If it doesn't connect, leave the program running and disconnect the cable from the phone and then reconnect it.

Click the "Install" button and then select "JAD file (recommended)..."

The open dialog box pops up. Navigate to where you saved the iTunes folder with the jad file in it. Highlight the jad and click "Open".

It will take a minute or so to install iTunes. Eventually it will show in your applications list. When it does double click it.

Make sure the "CORElet" box is the only one checked.

Click the "Restart" button and then close MotoMidMan.

iTunes is now installed but there is no way to get to the application to start it on the phone so we must make a shortcut to it. You need to make five shortcuts on your phone and it doesn't matter what they are. Just follow my example if you want.

Press your

key and then press and hold the

key again while highlighting "Games & Apps".

You will then get this message. Select "Yes".

You will then get to the "Shortcut" screen with the key field highlighted. You must number these shortcuts in order 1 through 5 so click "Change".

Change the number "10" to "1", then click "Ok".

Click "Done".

You'll always be replacing something from your shortcuts menu so just click "Yes" and you'll get a confirmation screen. Remember you have to do this four more times for shortcuts 2 through 5.

Start P2K Tools. These screen shots are from the older version of the program. We are now going to upload that seem we downloaded. So enter "0002" in the "num:" box and enter "0005" in the "rec:" box. Then click "Load From File".

Now the open dialog box appears, so navigate to where you saved seem "0002_0005", highlight it and click "Open". Then click the "Save To Phone" button. Click "Restart".

iTunes is now installed. All you have to do to use it is press the

key and then "5" and iTunes will start. Notice the 1000 song limit.

Now you need to install MotoTunes to put music on the phone. Find the program you downloaded earlier and start it.

Now set your phone's USB connection to "Memory Card" mode. To check this setting press the

key then go to "Settings", press "Select", go to "Connection", press "Select", go to "USB Settings", press "Select" then look at "Default Connection:". If it says "Data/Fax Connection" then press "Change", scroll to "Memory Card" and press "Select". Now connect your phone to the data cable. You will now see this screen:

You should see "C:\Program Files\motoTunes should be highlighted in the drop down box with no other options in it. There are two buttons at the very bottom of the screen, click the left button. This will install the MotoTunes program to your computer.

A DOS window will open briefly and install some files to your phone.

If you go to your Windows' "Start" button on your desktop you'll see a new folder was added to the programs list. Open the MotoTunes folder and start MotoTunes.

Click on "File" then "Options".

Verify all of your settings match mine. Click "OK" when you are done.

To add songs, click the "Add file(s)..." button.

The open dialog box appears. Find the song in mp3 or m4a format you want to put on the phone. Highlight it and click "Open".

When you are done uploading songs, click the "Update mobile..." button.

It will take about 30 seconds to upload your typical song to the phone. Just watch the status bar at the bottom to let you know how the transfer is going. Do not disconnect the phone until MotoTunes tells you that you can.

Once it says you can disconnect the phone, go ahead, even if the phone itself has a screen saying do not disconnect. Once you are done close the program by clicking "File" and then "Exit".

Macintosh users who downloaded the alternate iTunes file with the rebuildable database feature in it take note here. Once you have iTunes installed and have transferred some songs to your phone, start the iTunes program and press the

key. You will see this screen.

Scroll down to the highlighted line and click "Select". iTunes will ask for confirmation so select "Yes".

You will then see this screen for awhile, depending on how many songs you are adding. I was adding just one and it only took a couple seconds to do this.

Custom startup and shutdown animation & sound

You can change the animation that appears after the splash screen and when you shut the phone off. You can also have your own custom audio play with these animations.

Here's my startup animation: (refresh the browser to play it)

Here is that same animation broken down frame by frame. It's really not hard to make your own start up animation if you have the patience to make a few gifs and stitch them together with a gif animation program like Adobe's ImageReady. If you go to my "media" page here you'll find a link to free custom start up and shut down animation files.

If you want to use your own animation, the files you need to upload must be called "custwakeup.gif" and "custgoodbye.gif" (your phone may not have these files already). They are 176 pixels in width and 220 pixels in height. They must be uploaded to the "a/" folder. I used P2K Tools to upload the files. These screen shots are from the older version of the program.

Let's turn off the current startup and shutdown animation. Start P2K Phone File Manager and download seem "0032_0001" and "004a_0001". On seem "0032_0001" go to offset "1D" and uncheck bit "3".

Now go to offset "31" and uncheck bit "0".

Now we need to turn on custom animation. Go to offset "46" and check bit "0". Save this seem.

Now open seem "004a_0001" and go to offset "23" and type"01" into the box. Save this seem, then upload both seems.

Restart your phone and check out your new graphics. Now we'll get the audio changed. Open seem "0032_0001" again and go to offset "24" and check bit "3". Save and upload this seem again.

Now just make a couple mp3 files that are only 5 seconds long and are recorded at no more than 192 kbps and recorded at a constant bit rate and NOT at a variable bit rate. If you have some mp3s that are in variable bit rate and you don't know how to convert them, download the program Switch right here.

The startup sound must be labeled "Cust_Start~up.mp3", some carriers call this file "Start~up.mp3" instead. I have also seen this file called "AlertFile036.mid". The shutdown sound must be labeled "Power~down.mp3". I've also seen this file called "AlertFile031.mid". Both mp3s must be uploaded to the "c/mobile/audio" folder. Some people have said their mp3s work in the "a/mobile/audio" folder though. It may take you a few uploads to figure this out, it did for me. Once you've uploaded your mp3s, restart the phone and try it out.

There is a second way to do this as well. Start the program P2K Advanced Editor.

Notice that even with the phone connected it still says disconnected. Click the "Connect in P2K mode" button and wait a few seconds. If your phone isn't discovered then disconnect and reconnect the USB cable.

You can see now that it is connected.

Go to the "Phone Services" menu and select "Wakeup & Goodbye".

Then click the "Read from Phone" button.

Make all your selections here.

When you are done click the "Write to Phone" button.

Then click the "Restart Phone" button.

Shut off the loading screen for Java

Download seem "0032_0001", go to offset "71" and uncheck bit "6".

Save SMS to phone or to SIM

Download seem "0032_0001" and go to offset "40" and at bit "6" uncheck the box to store SMS messages on the phone, or check the box to store them on the SIM.

Incoming call to phonebook linkage

Download seem "0032_0001" and go to offset "3E" and at bit "4" uncheck the box. Now if you have someone stored in your phonebook and that person calls you, then their name and type (i.e. work) and number will be displayed when your phone rings instead of just the number.

Instant on power button

How would you like to not have to hold your power button for a few seconds to make your phone turn on? Well there's a simple seem edit that will fix this. Download seem "0032_0001". Then go to offset "2F" and at bit "7" check the box.

Pictures for caller identification from transflash card

Download seem "0032_0001" and go to offset "8C" and at bit "2" check the box to display a picture for a phonebook entry. This picture can be stored on the transflash card.

Mods for the video camera

You can add video styles to your recordings for strange effects. First you must download seem "0032_0001" and go to offset "82" and check bit "0" for this mod to work. Next go to offset "81" and check bit "2", bit "3", bit "4", bit "5" and bit "6". Now when you restart the phone you will see a new menu entry at Video Camera> Videos> Videos Setup> Styles.

You can also change the file size limits that the video camera is allowed to have. Download seem "004e_0001" and at offset "412" you can set many variables (provided in the video setup menu the video length variable is set to "maximum". Just enter the number you want directly into the text box: enter "01" for a 1 megabyte file limit, enter "14" for a 5 megabyte file limit, enter "28" for a 10 megabyte file size, etc. etc. You can enter "FF" for an unlimited file length.

You can also change your file size lengths and whether or not you want to record in .3gp or .mp4 format through a program called P2K Advanced Editor. You can download that program right here.

Start P2K Advanced Editor. Click "Connect in P2K mode".

Click on "Phone Services" and then "Video".

Click "Read from Phone" to see your current settings. Here you can select your recording file size limit and what format you want to record in.

When you are done click "Write to Phone".

Then click "Restart Phone".

Adjusting speaker and microphone levels

First download the file "gain_table.bin" from the phone's "a" drive in the root folder. Now open the file in XVI32. The offsets listed below control the various features of the phone. The factory settings are listed first followed by a recommended setting. Just enter the number you want into the text box.

Speaker settings:

Offset "0D" controls the earpiece call gain. "01" ("02" recommended).
Offset "19" earpiece keypad gain. "01" ("01" recommended).
Offset "25" earpiece system tone gain. "01" ("01" recommended).
Offset "31" external speaker speakerphone gain. "00" ("00" recommended).
Offset "3D" external speaker keypad gain when on speakerphone. "01" ("01" recommended).
Offset "49" external speaker mp3/midi/video gain. "01" ("01" recommended).
Offset "4E" external speaker system tone gain. "05" ("05" recommended).
Offset "61" wired headset call gain. "04" ("04" recommended).
Offset "6D" wired headset inner keypad gain. "02" ("02" recommended).
Offset "DC" Bluetooth headset call gain. "08" ("0E" recommended).
Offset "EA" Bluetooth headset inner keypad gain. "08" ("08" recommended).
Offset "F6" external speaker system tone gain when Bluetooth headset connected. "08" ("08" recommended).
Offset "139" earpiece voice name/voice record playback gain. "01" ("01" recommended).
Offset "1BD" wired headset mp3/midi/video gain. "01" ("01-04" recommended).
Offset "15D" external speaker voice dial gain when on speakerphone call. "01" ("01" recommended).
Offset "178" Bluetooth voice name/voice record playback gain. "08" ("08" recommended).
Offset "1C0" controls master volume when playing mp3s. "05" ("05 recommended).

Microphone settings:

Offset "1E1" handset microphone gain. "1D" ("1D" recommended).
Offset "1F9" wired headset microphone gain. "1F" ("1F" recommended).
Offset "21D" speakerphone microphone gain. "1F" ("1F" recommended).
Offset "238" Bluetooth headset microphone gain. "08" ("0A" recommended).

There is another way to adjust your settings through a more friendly interface. GP Tables Editor is a program that lists the various audio settings and allows you to make a couple clicks and save your settings to the phone. You can download the program right here.

First click the "Connect" button.

Click the "Load file" button and select "Phone".

There are five buttons with lists of settings in them: "Master Volume", "Speakers", "Speakers II", "Bluetooth" and "Microphones". Your settings are all made in these menus.

When you are done click "Save file" and select "Phone".

Click "Restart".
